My step-dads family really was addicted to GMC pickups (auto transmission & stick), and i can never really remember a serious problem.

Just throwing it out there cause no ones brought up GMC yet.

Catapiler engines are optional on all Ford class 5 and up vehicles.

The old 7.3L Powerstroke was a solid and reliable motor, but was terminated in early 2003 due to an increasing emissions standards on diesels. It was easier to start from the ground up, than to make the 7.3L meet the new standards and thus the problematic 6.0L Powerstroke was born. In the early model years the 6.0L was a crapshoot, either being dead-on reliable or utterly useless. By 2006 Navistar had gotten a handle on the motor and it suffered the fewest warranty claims of any gas or diesel engine sold in the United States. Again, due to emissions the 6.0L was replaced with the 6.4L Powerstoke.

In 2011, the 6.7L Powerstroke will be built entirely by Ford (you know, the one American pickup maker that didn't have to ask the governmet for money to bail itself out) and is currently putting out over 400hp and 740lb/ft of torque in pre-production test motors.

As for the Duramax... let's just hope you got the extended warranty to cover your fuel injectors. Replacing the injectors on an early Duramax is no easy matter, and sadly is almost required by 120k miles. New models are easier to change them on, but still prone to issue. Nothing like dropping an injector or two on a steep grade. Hey, but the Allison tranny has hill descent control, so as you start rolling backwards down the hill it can automatically shift into a lower gear to save wear on the brakes.

I won't enven try to argue with the Cummins, it really is a solid motor. But the transmission is junk and the rest of the truck is crap.
