My gosh that Trek has so much potential! Too bad she has vertical drop outs...if only they were semi vert or horizontal, it would make a killer SS. Anyways, strip her back, remove all gear cable braze ons (grind the buggers) and...

Ingredients:
1x donor quill stem - the older and more chromed the better
2x aluminium lathe offcuts
1x pair Vernier calipers
1x hacksaw
1x big farkoff production lathe

Recipe:
Carefully slice bar clamp off donor stem, then remove all remnants of the head, so that a simple hollow tube remains.
Place steerer in lathe - machine down until the tube is of a uniform diameter, or until golden brown.

Prepare one of the offcuts, so that it fits snugly around the steerer. Make a cut down its length, to allow for flex under clamping force.
Make sure the length is a little less than the new stem, allowing room for a top cap.

The second offcut serves as a topping - it's not cooked properly until it's nice and shiny.
Final runs of 0.2mm at a time, with a sharp cutting tool and plenty of coolant, should produce the desired result.

Mix together as per normal quill adapter requirements. Add a stainless M8 washer underneath bolt head to taste.
(I don't know what grade alu I'm working with... not taking any chances.)

Serves one.

As for tentioning, just buy a tentioner or go 'ghetto ol' skool' and use a locked out short cage derailleur.

Nice work Kellan.

You know, my LBS has some John Deere model cruisers in stock... could have saved you a ton of work.
